Okialie dokalie then:

The mother and one daughter cross.

The mother brings the boat back and takes her second daughter across.

She brings the boat back again the father takes one son.

He returns with the boat and takes the second son.

He returns with the boat again and takes his wife.

The wife then goes back and gets the hunter.

The hunter then returns for the dog.

Now, that wasn't hard.

And the daughters weren't killed because the sons were there also and so he couldn't kill 'em.

Fine, they grab a psychiatrist and take him across BEFORE the hubby.  THEN the mother OR father, either one, returns for the hunter, is dropped off and the hunter returns for the dog.  The psychiatrist is keeping the mother OR father FROM killing any of the children by digging deep INTO their disturbing childhood and learning WHY they would want to kill the children.  :eyebrows:

Following the concept that Sobe said, that there really is just Father/Son, Mother/Daughter and Hunter/Dog  (ie, the mother is someone elses daughter, which is correct)

I'll be using F/S/M/D/H/g for Father/Son/Mother/Daughter/Hunter/Dog (g for dog)

Side 1 for where they start, side 2 for where they are to end up.

Ok, so F/S travel to 2, DROP off S, then F goes to 1

Pick up M, F/M travel to 2, DROP off F, go to 1

H/g go to 2, get off.  F goes to 1.

M/D go to 2, DROP off D, M goes to 1.

Pick up F, so F/M head to 2.

All are across.

BUT...if you follow SoBe's theory that there's really just 4 plus the hunter and dog, then all are already dead because:

If the mother IS a daughter, and the father a son, then they have both killed on another plus the children because if left with the daughters the father would kill them, if left with the sons the mother would kill them.  The father is a son, so the mother would kill him, and the mother is a daughter so the father would kill her.  Your theory is not thoroughly thought through.  Rethink it and come back with a better answer.  I still say the dog swam

Okay...here's my answer:

Hunter and dog cross together to side 2.

Hunter leaves dog on side 2, comes back to side 1 alone (dog can't kill anyone cuz no one's there).

Hunter takes one daughter across to side 2, returns to side 1 with dog.

Hunter and dog stay on side 1, mother and other daughter go across to side 2.

Mother comes back alone to side 1, mother and father cross together to side 2.

Father goes back alone and stays on side 1, hunter and dog cross to side 2.

Mother returns alone to side 1.

Mother and father cross together again to side 2.

Father returns alone to side 1.

Father crosses with first son to side 2.

Mother and father return to side 1.

Mother stays on side 1, father and second son cross to side 2.

Father returns to side 1 and gets mother.

They both go to side 2.

Now all are alive and across the river.
