Well in the case of haircare and perfumes, it's just stupid. It's a shame that animals siffer because humans are so vain.

But I feel testing medicines on animals is a little different. Think of a scenario.

A dog and a young man both have a disease without a cure (so far). A doctor thinks he's found something that may work, although there may be a risk that he's wrong and could kill whoever he tests it on. The young man has a bright future ahead of him if the cure works. The dog lays around all day, craps everywhere and really does nothing except be loved by humans. Which would you rather risk killing?

It sounds brutal, but I'd much rather a dog was killed than a person with a good future.

What if sparing the dog would result in his (or her) saving a childs life and that child would grow to accomplish more and be of more value (not just financially) to the world, having a brighter and more meaningful life than the owner of the dog?

Well, then you should kill the dog, buy a goldfish (they're fairly cheap), tether the child to the fish and not have to worry about anything. The child would learn how to swim in circles for days on end, the fish would have a nice companion, and the dog would be in dog heaven (or hell if he was a pit bull).
